Octobop 20th Anniversary Celebration!

Octobop 20th Anniversary Celebration - Part 2
For the past 20 years, Octobop has brought its version of West Coast Cool Jazz to fans around the globe. With 7 CDs released and hundreds of live shows across the west, it’s time to celebrate. On August 2 and August 3, two special concerts will be presented and everyone is welcome. On both nights, Octobop alumni and special guests will join the octet to amp up the excitement.
Saturday August 3 brings Octobop to Savanna Jazz in San Carlos. Appearing that night is Bay Area favorite Nancy Gilliland. Nancy recorded Gerry Mulligan and Judy Holliday’s Night Lights on Octobop’s second CD. Since moving to California in 1984, Nancy has become a fixture in the San Francisco Bay area music scene, performing at Palo Alto's Cafe Fino for 19 years. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to her performances at the San Jose Jazz Festival, Birdland in New York City, and many other venues across the country. This evening presents a rare opportunity to hear Nancy with a larger group. Her musicality and humor make a great pairing with Octobop.

OCTOBOP

OCTOBOP
What started as an experiment in 1999 has now managed to thrive and grow through today. Starting with the cool West Coast Jazz from California in the 1950s and reaching out to do so much more, Octobop has always strived to create music that is listenable, accessible, and at times, humorous. You would expect to find music by Gerry Mulligan, Miles Davis, Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Howard Rumsey, and others who created something special. Add to that mix music ranging from Jelly Roll Morton to the Allman Brothers and throw in some movie and TV music and you will never know what you get at an Octobop gig.

As an octet, Octobop has enough structure to create interesting nuances and colors in the music. Yet it is small enough to provide lots of blowing room for everyone in the group. Writers and arrangers as well as players, the members of Octobop create music you are unlikely to hear anywhere else.
