… is an electric performer and vocalist whose style is rife with diversity. Ms. Coleman breezes through most forms of popular American music without effort, switching at will between genres. She has worked with nationally and internationally recognized Grammy award winning producers such Walter Afanasief (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, Grover Washington) and Norman Connors (Phyllis Hyman, Michael Henderson), as well as with noted San Francisco/Oakland producers Larry Batiste and Claytoven Richardson. Included among artists with whom she has worked onstage are the Grammy
nominated Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, Ray Obiedo, Kenny Loggins, Sheila E., Japanese pianist Makoto Kuriya, and internationally celebrated jazz legend Herbie Hancock.
A truly gifted entertainer and vocalist, Darlene Coleman is unique in her performances and presentation. Born in Louisiana and raised between there and San Francisco’s Fillmore District, she grew up during the time when SF had the best of everything musically. Between Louisiana and SF, the younger Darlene was provided a delightful musical diet. With so many genres as influences, her style has developed as one uniquely shaped and configured to have the ability to express each of those styles individually as well as present hybrid renditions of songs we all know and love.
She grew up and pursued her dream of first performing at home and has done so with everyone from Pride and Joy, to the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, to Dick Bright’s SRO. As a solo performer, she has been seen at a variety of San Francisco/Bay Area music and entertainment venues, and festivals within the US and abroad. She subsequently traveled to, and lived and worked extensively in Japan, China, and other locations in Asia as a featured vocalist at music and entertainment venues, private events, and on television programs.
Ms. Coleman has begun a new chapter in her career and is focusing on living and working within the Bay Area, and around the United States performing the music she grew up on and has come to love passionately – jazz! Expect to hear marvelous renditions of Ella, Nancy, and Natalie as well as Ray, Nat, and Frank. While her renditions of jazz standards will certainly set the stage for plenty of nostalgia, she always puts her own stamp on a song selection. Prepare to experience the classics in a fresh new way!
